10 Types of Medications That Can Make You Feel Depressed
Here's a checklist of drugs to watch out for
Researchers have long known that many drugs can make us feel down or even depressed and that, as we age, our changing body chemistries put us at a greater risk for this side effect. But few doctors think to review the medications list when their patients have the telltale symptoms of depression: lack of energy, listlessness, feeling rundown, excessive fatigue, changes in appetite and sleeping patterns, sadness, despair. As a result, they often layer on top of the drugs causing those symptoms a new drug, such as an antidepressant, for treating them, which may in turn trigger additional side effects.

The Caregiver....How are YOU doing today?
The Caregiver....How are YOU doing today?
This seems to be a question that is not asked enough or we think what we are feeling is not as important as what our loved one is going through. This job we have taken on is a tough one and there are days when I think my "stress rope" cannot be pulled any tighter. Then there are other times that make those bad days just a memory. Do you feel like banging your head against a wall one day? And then the next day your loved one is attentive and loving and comprehends whatever you say? There are some who keep those feelings bottled up within themselves; others take the time for outside resources and others who look at sites such as this for some understanding. I do better when I have someone else to bounce my feelings off of. Let's face it....we aren't superhuman and besides ourselves and perhaps a family to take care of we now have taken on the responsibility of another human who is incapable of taking care of themselves. Do you breeze through the care giving without a problem? If so, I would like to know how you do it, maybe you can offer some new ideas; do you have feelings of frustration and need to talk about those? Come and talk and know that you can speak freely and without judgement and without finger pointing.

6 Signs of Caregiver Burnout
The tasks of caring for an elderly loved one can add up quickly, leaving you exhausted and stressed out. Chances are, if you've been a caregiver for more than a few weeks you've experienced a certain degree of caregiver burnout.
Keep your eyes peeled for these seven common signs of burnout. If you find yourself thinking or saying these things, you may want to seek help from your doctor and consider finding some respite care:
Four Primary kinds of care providers
The Four Primary Kinds of Care Providers
When your loved one can no longer care for herself, it's time to find help. But what kind of care environment is best?
The good news is you have options, more than you think. Making the transition to a new care environment or modifying a current one, like a home isn't as difficult as you might think. In general, there are four common care environments: Home Health Care, Assisted Living Facilities, Nursing Homes, and Adult Daycare Centers. Continuing Care Retirement Communities usually provide several care environments within a multi-building campus.

Become a caregiver advocate
Care Advocate, by choice
Posted by Liz Boardman
One thing I've learned as a professional Care Advocate is that most people become caregivers by accident. In my world stories about 'sudden caregivers' are more common than you might think.
I meet and talk to caregivers all the time, in all sorts of situations.
Some families call from hospitals wanting advice on what to do after their loved one is discharged. I hear from long-distance caregivers on the hunt for local services. Others just need to talk with a Care Advocate like me because they don't know where to begin.
These stories share a common thread: caregivers want help, advice, and someone to turn to. That's why there's a caregiving team at AARP® Caregiving Help and Advice from Genworth.
Day in and day out, the Care Advocate team at Genworth helps families make informed choices about caregiving support services. While every family is unique, a few bits of advice can apply to everyone.
- Make a 'Care Wish List'. It's amazing how many families forget to make a care wish list with their loved one. It can guide your decisions around housing, social settings, care services, and more.
- Go Local. So many families are surprised to find they have options in their community. When you explore your local options, finding care support services might be closer than you think.
- Keep In Touch. Caregiving takes time, energy and commitment. But it also takes friends, family and help from professionals when the moment calls for it. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
And remember, be an advocate for your loved one. You've started at the right place!
